Chef Jason Hammel of Lula Cafe Virtual Cook-along

Take your cooking skills to the next level with a cook-along from a culinary pro! Chef Jason Hammel, who was recently awarded the Jean Banchet Chef of the Year award and nominated as Best Chef Great Lakes by the James Beard Foundation, is known for his trailblazing seasonal cuisine. Adding creative new dishes to the Lula Cafe menu weekly, Chef Hammel was one of the first to source local, organic ingredients and build close relationships with Midwestern farmers, emphasizing freshness and seasonality.

This exclusive evening will feature a spring-inspired three-course menu with specialty cocktails, available for pick-up directly from the restaurant. Chef Hammel will walk guests through the steps to prepare the main course from their home kitchen, including how to baste the perfect halibut in butter, and how to express yourself through creative plating. Cardmembers will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the cook-along (questions may be limited based on timing). Ji Suk Yi, a digital anchor for NewsNation, will moderate the evening, including the Cardmember Q&A.  

Lula Cafe opened in a small storefront on Kedzie Boulevard with a four-burner home stove and a dented collection of thrifted pots and pans. Today, stretching three storefronts, it is the founding member of the nationally recognized Logan Square culinary community and a celebrated forerunner of the ‘farm to table’ movement in Chicago. Lula Cafe has been featured on NPR’s “This American Life,” in The New York Times, Food and Wine, Bon Appetit, and in Chicago press where Lula has been named an LTH Forum Great Neighborhood Restaurant, Jean Banchet Best Neighborhood Restaurant, and a proud member of the “Eater Essential 38.”

Ji Suk Yi has worked in Chicago media for over a decade in television, radio, and print. Currently, she's a digital anchor with national cable news network NewsNation, which premiered September 2020. Ji was a contributing host on ABC Chicago’s talk show "Windy City LIVE" for seven seasons. A life-long food enthusiast, Ji is thrilled to have called one of the best food cities in the world, Chicago, home since 2006; and was honored to host the virtual 2020 James Beard Awards.

Menu includes:


Smoked trout dip with Blis Steelhead Caviar and dill chips

Fennel pollen and sea salt crackers with green strawberry and burrata

Lamb and brown rice meatballs with scallion salsa verde

Main Course:  

Alaskan Halibut with parmesan gnocchi, asparagus, pistachio and Mandarin

(Cook-along with Chef Jason)

Dessert Course:

Almond Cake with rhubarb, rose and mascarpone

Specialty Cocktails:

Corpse Reviver No. 2 - gin, shōchū, cocchi rosa, italicus, lime, absinthe

Old Orchard - bourbon, apple brandy, crème de noyaux, curaçao, lime, angostura bitters

Please note: This event is available in the Chicago area with the meal kit available for pick-up only. You will receive a detailed confirmation letter and additional event information via email and be required to sign a release waiver in order to participate. This virtual event will take place on Zoom. Logging on with a smartphone is not recommended for this event. Specific log-in instructions for Zoom will be sent via email four (4) days prior to your event. Must be 21 or older to pick up the meal kit and participate in this event. Portions of your meal will be pre-prepared, although some heating or cooking is required. By purchasing this event, you agree that we can share your contact information with the restaurant to ensure correct pick-up. The restaurant will not share your information with others. This event will have a set menu and we will be unable to accommodate individual dietary restrictions.
