Private Guided Tour of America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s at the Art Institute of Chicago!

Arts & Entertainment

Grant Wood. American Gothic, 1930. Friends of American Art Collection. The Art Institute of Chicago.

America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s brings together 50 works by some of the foremost artists of the era—including Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grant Wood and numerous artists who examined the landscape of the US during the Great Depression as they sought to forge a new national art and identity.

Collectively, the aesthetically and politically varied works produced in the 1930s paint a revealing portrait of the nation’s evolving psyche. America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s tells the story of a nation’s fall from grace and irrevocable changes to the American dream.

Inside Access from Chase guests will enjoy after-hours access to the exhibit during guided tours. Following the exhibition tours, guests will be treated to a hors d’oeuvres reception and dinner with exhibit curator and author Sarah Kelly Oehler.

Sarah Kelly Oehler is the Gilda and Henry Buchbinder Associate Curator of American Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focuses on the modern American art collection. She curated They Seek a City: Chicago and the Art of Migration, 1910–1950, and was co-curator of Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine. She has contributed to numerous other exhibitions and publications at the museum, including The Age of American Impressionism, American Modernism, and Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago.
